Evgenia Goltseva is a bright and original artist. In her work, Evgenia works with a variety of images. The common thing among them is that each of them is “purified” by the artist, brought to the symbol - be it a serious reflection on sacred Russian ideas or a humorous statement “on the topic of the day.” High professionalism, a rich cultural background, and knowledge of design allow us to select the exact color combination and compositional solution, interesting and non-trivial shape and texture for each idea. Many of Evgenia’s works are distinguished by a kind of “alchemical magic”. Looking at them, one gets the impression that the picture is a field of some mysterious action, consisting of primary elements-symbols - magical and archaic in their simplicity and power of sound.

This sound was especially clearly manifested in the artist’s unique project - “MATRA”.

“MATRY” is at the same time a reference to the images of the traditional Russian nesting doll, and at the same time, an art like no other, born of the bright individuality of the artist. In this series of works, Evgeniya finds her unique combination of sculptural forms, decorative painting, laconicism of the image, its symbolism and texture - as an integral part of folk art and the art of design.

The MATRA project began in 2022 as “art for oneself” - that is, the artist initially thought of it not as a commercial project, but was created, as they say, “at the behest of the soul.” To date, Evgeniya has made about 200 figures from the MATRA series, none of which are repeated. The artist rethinks the image, meaning, form and content of the traditional matryoshka doll, introducing into it the sound of modernity and his unique artistic vision. The shape of Matras only sometimes repeats the traditional shape of a matryoshka, but more often it is interpreted in a new way, consisting of various, but invariably simple elements. The content of the images is also excellent. Traditional nesting dolls are identical and almost faceless. Evgenia makes each of them an individual who has absorbed many cultural meanings and images of world artistic culture. Familiar symbols - birds, flowers, circles, waves, squares - appear here in new, “fresh” combinations and modern contexts. Modern symbols are also born - “Rebel”, “Yudashkin”, “Soul”, “Malvina”, etc. Thus, Evgenia Goltseva creates and lays in her art new cultural codes, inseparably intertwined with their ancient origins.
